Host Troubleshooting
I See a Web Page That Is Not Mine
If you have a new account, it can take anywhere from 3 to 48 hours for your new Website to come "Live". The new host IP must “propagate” throughout the Web in order for the IP to be looked up correctly. Until this has happens, you may see a parked page or a Website that does not look like the one that is supposed to be on that domain name. You can use a tool such as What's My DNS to see if the DNS has propagated yet.
If you have seen your site live in the past, then it could be that your domain name has expired, it has been re-pointed or pointed incorrectly. This may also be an indicator that your Website has been hijacked.. Hijackers often break into website back-ends and make the website display something entirely different than what was supposed to be there.
No Change When Editing Website
This is usually because the Web browser is using cached files on your computer instead of the live ones on the host. Try pressing the [F5] Key to reload the web page or try clearing your Browser’s cache. You can also try pressing [Control] and [F5] keys together. Rarely, there could be an instance of your ISP caching the pages at their location which would have the same effect. If this happens, you may need to change your IP so that your computer looks like a different computer to the ISP or call your ISP directly.
Seeing a List of Files Instead of the Website
In order for your Website to display its pages automatically when you point your browser at the home page, you must have an index page installed. These consist of files that look like this:
- index.htm
- index.html
- index.php
If none of these files are present in the home (root) directory, you Website will simply return a list of files that are in that directory instead. Make sure you have uploaded your files and folders into the correct directory on the host typically named public_html.
The exception to this is that you have a modified .htaccess file which could be redirecting this page. Some programs like WordPress, for instance, make modifications to the .httaccess file. Something may have gone wrong with this program or its settings.
Website Was Working but Stopped
Make sure you have connection to the internet by visiting a page you have never been to before. You could do this by searching for something arbitrary in a search engine and then visiting one of the results.
Some of My Website Is Not Working
Linux is case-sensitive, make sure all your files are using the same case.. Example: Host.jpg, host.JPG, HOST.JPG are all different files than host.jpg . Make sure your cases are correct.
You could have overwritten some files while expanding a ZIP file or while copying your files. Some files like style.css, are use on every page of the Website. If it is overwritten, you will probably have a white background and very poorly formatted text.
