.com comes from the word commercial and was to be used solely as commercial. It was originally controlled by the United States Department of Defense but is now maintained by Verisign.

.com is one of the six original TLDs : .org, .gov, .arpa , .net, .edu , and .mil and was created back in 1985. .com has become by far, the most popular and also most crowded TLD of them all. Even today, it is very difficult to get a quality SLD (second level domain name; the part before the .com) and one must settle for what remains available.

The .biz TLD was introduced later to relieve some of the congestion in the .com TLD , but it never took off like the .com did. .com remained extremely popular because it gives the impression of a serious business of the like of Amazon and the dot-com explosion of the early 2000s.
