.info
The TLD .info comes from the full word information and was intended to be used for informative resources on the internet. There is, however, no restrictions on the use of this TLD so anyone can acquire one if they wish whereas other TLDs such as .edu are restricted to be used within a certain classification (.edu is for educational institutions). Of the other domains introduced at the time, .info fared the best outside of the .com TLD of course.
.info was introduced in May, 2001 and by November 2002, already had more than a million registrants. Probably due to its low purchase price .info became the most affordable TLD for spammers, malware, and may other illegal or fraudulent activities.
